EA Art Test

Recently did an art test for Electronic Arts where I had to pick two genres and then create a costume for each that could crossover between a male, female, and male brute body type (so no skirts or bare chests).  I picked Superhero and Fantasy.  Each one needed color realistic and cartoony design, then throw in an anime version and a turnaround for any of the designs.  This is what I came up with in the two day time allotted.

Come on out to C2E2 !

The weekend is nearly upon us and the Chicago convention known as C2E2 is upon us. My brother and I will be attending and setting up in Artist Alley at table C2.  That should be easy to remember.  :)

I'll have sketchbooks, prints, and original art from Star Trek/ Legion of Superheroes for sale.  My commission list will be open on a first come first serve basis and I'll be taking a limited number of names each day, so if you miss out on the one day, please come back the following.

No new sketchbook for this year, but a couple new prints of color covers I've done will be available in 11" by 14" size.

Looking forward to seeing you out there!

Some online commissions

Here are some commissions that I did at home through email.  Some were more standard commissions but if you're looking for something more complicated as others were, you'd want me to do it at home.

But if you were looking for something sooner and are in the Kansas City area, drop by Planet Comicon this weekend.

Star Trek/ Legion of Superheroes #6 out with a bang

Here it is folks.  The last issue of the meet up of the Enterprise crew and the Legionnaires.  It was a great ride for me and my brother, Philip, and I can only hope I get to work with them again in the future, so let those editors know.  As a treat I got to do one of the last covers variations which can be seen a couple posts down.

Thanks again for checking it out and if you're in the Kansas City area, bring the set along to get signed by Philip and I.

Live long the Legion and Prosper!

Diving into 3D modeling

The program I'm using is ZBrush.  I signed up for a class at the local community college and after a few hours I started feeling comfortable using a couple brushes to create a fairly nice body from a sphere.  (I'll post some pics of that in a bit.)  But seeing how it's an intermediate class and I've never used this program at all I guess I was getting a little ahead of myself and was instructed to focus more on sculpting a head or less complicated object than a full figure.

The subject I chose was the space pirate figure I started sculpting only focusing on her head.

When I started sculpting her I kept going back to a more realistic proportioned style, and when drawing it relies on more indication of features rather than structure, so in sculpting this head I had to think a bit more about how the shape of the nose is formed, how eyelids go over the eyeball, getting the shape of the lips to be pleasing and getting the proportions down right.  All in all, I'm having fun and will continue to post pics of the progress.  This was done using about 4 brushes.  You can really get a lot out of a couple brushes.

Star Trek/ Legion of Superheroes #6 Cover

Whoo!  I got to do a cover for the book.  Better late than never.  Went with a retro style with the linework and composition and colors.  Drawn and colored in Photoshop.

Star Trek/ Legion of Superheroes #4 Pencil Highlights

Drawing some more Trek looking tech.  Note the plasma screen ala Borg.

Having fun with McCoy and Saturn Girl's conversation.

Cityscape environment and the challenge of the group shot in a small confined shuttlecraft.

First time Kirk gets to use his mojo on Shady.

Just had fun with the layout and action.

Again, more fun action.  Although giant battles are a pain.  Great McCoy dialog noting the color of Brainy's blood.

Can you feel the tension?  Uhura butt shot, too.  :)

I didn't just want to show the backs of the teams looking at the one figure, so I continued the shocked look into the stylized composition.  I gave Chekov the "confuzzled" face, because it actually exists.  Look it up.

Kirk recognizes Flint from his universe, but I'm not sure how, with the dark colored hair and goatee, but the script takes care of that.

Star Trek/ Legion of Superheroes #3 pencil highlights

Nice role call type of page as the two teams face off.

The Amalgam Universe Imperial Elite.  Star Trek characters and races take over the Fatal Five.

girl on girl on girl action.  'Nuff said.

The original script had a smaller version of Validus as himself, but it felt weird to me to have that, so I suggested the gorilla like Mugatu to fill in his place.  Liked the teamwork in this one.

Showy double page spread for the Trek guys.

...and one for the Legion crew.

My roughs for the Imperial Elite.  Note Mugatu's color here.  I was surprised and pleased with the purple Mugatu in the comic.

Star Trek/ Legion of Superheroes #2 pencil highlights

Here are a bunch of pages from the second issue, that I found fun to draw.
It's been a while since I had to draw a sky line.
Really fun double page spread featuring the amalgam universe.
Hero shots are always fun and the city shot in the first two panels lent itself a cinematic quality.
More fun group shots.
Got to flesh out the shipyard out a bit more for the scene.  Typically I would want to draw a layout before starting the page but you don't really know how extensive it will be until you see the script.
I think this is a nice balanced page with the escape and the cool down getting back to the story.
Starting to get the hang of drawing an "older" Legion.
And there you have it.  They finally meet!  What will happen?  Oh noes.
