Just had fun with the layout and action.

Again, more fun action. Although giant battles are a pain. Great McCoy dialog noting the color of Brainy's blood.

Can you feel the tension? Uhura butt shot, too. :)

I didn't just want to show the backs of the teams looking at the one figure, so I continued the shocked look into the stylized composition. I gave Chekov the "confuzzled" face, because it actually exists. Look it up.

Kirk recognizes Flint from his universe, but I'm not sure how, with the dark colored hair and goatee, but the script takes care of that.

Nice role call type of page as the two teams face off.

girl on girl on girl action. 'Nuff said.

The original script had a smaller version of Validus as himself, but it felt weird to me to have that, so I suggested the gorilla like Mugatu to fill in his place. Liked the teamwork in this one.

Here are a bunch of pages from the second issue, that I found fun to draw.

It's been a while since I had to draw a sky line.

Really fun double page spread featuring the amalgam universe.

Hero shots are always fun and the city shot in the first two panels lent itself a cinematic quality.

More fun group shots.

Got to flesh out the shipyard out a bit more for the scene. Typically I would want to draw a layout before starting the page but you don't really know how extensive it will be until you see the script.

I think this is a nice balanced page with the escape and the cool down getting back to the story.

Starting to get the hang of drawing an "older" Legion.

And there you have it. They finally meet! What will happen? Oh noes.

Star Trek Legion of Superheroes #1 pencil highlights

Here are some pages from the first issue of the Star Trek/ Legion of Superheroes crossover I, and my brother are fortunate to work on. Actually, it's a really nice fit having worked on both properties. The trick was to find a balance between the two and I felt keeping a style that might fit the television series would work best.


Big attack on Durla in the alternate dimension to kick off the series.

First time to draw the entire crew. Only had get approved for Kirk and Spock. Bridge might be a little more spacious here than the actual set.

Drawing the bridge was a lot of fun. Plenty of reference online.

The Legion team for this book. I wanted to keep them closer to the feel of the Levitz/ Giffen era, which they're from, so drawing them older wasn't as hard to do as one might expect, given I'm used to drawing them in their teens.

Kotaku Gallery Article/ Star Trek meets Legion of Superheroes: the comic!

Figure I'd answer the call for submissions from the writer Luke Plunkett and it turns out he really enjoyed the Star Wars: Jedi Outcast game, so he was kind enough to post a gallery on Kotaku: a site for gaming and otaku news.

What wasn't mentioned and I can't believe I didn't mention it here already is that I am penciling the new Legion of Superheroes/ Star Trek crossover for IDW Publishing. It will be a six issue series starting in October and is in the spotlight for Diamond Previews. I'm halfway done with the third issue so far and if I get permission, I might post some little preview pics here. If not, I'll post some stuff after the issue is out.

Just in time for Free Comic Book Day, although it's not one of the free comic books being given away, is a published Legion of Superheroes story written by Paul Levitz, penciled by me, and inked by my brother, Philip. It's been over 10 years since I've drawn XS and it was fun dipping my toe back into the pool of Legion characters. Granted, I'm not totally in sync with the reestablished Legion, due to some wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff, but diving back in I was glad to draw Night Girl and her bouffant. Will we see XS in the new Flashpoint storyline? I'm crossing my fingers. Here are the pencils for the issue and please go out on Free Comic Book Day, May 7th, to your local comic shop and support them.

The mosaic was produced on the computer and dropped in after Phil finished the inks.

Story took place in a monastery at Lake Tana in Africa.

Night Girl was suppose to look a little older.

hmm should've had a blur note on XS bouncing up and down.

Crack in the earth from previous story in Adventure Comics. What could it be?

Really fun pages for me and the colorist was suppose to make the shadow translucent in the final book. Aw well. The colorist did an awesome job with the FX in the bottom panel.

Awesomely fun page to draw. Panel 1 is a little tribute to Wings of Honneamise anime. Got to tech up the cosmic treadmill a bit as well.

Yeah! Full mosaic! What could it mean? I don't know! Really!

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE Game Concept Art Part 1: Characters and Alkali Lake

Traveling back in time now and looking at the X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged Edition. It's a game where, despite being a movie adaptation, is the closest to the look and feel of being Wolverine. Seriously, the guy has an indestructible skeleton and claws that can slice through anything. So imagine what that would do to a human body and, oh yeah, we went there. So rent, buy a copy, used or new, it doesn't matter to me anymore more, but check it out. Oh, you can watch him heal damage from skeleton, to muscle, to skin as well.

I was on this game for the duration of production. There were the earliest concepting stages where you were allowed to just be creative with almost no restrictions. We explored what we could do with the character and places he would go. What would make cool environments to fight in? What kind of baddies could possibly stand a chance against an enemy you can't possibly kill, etc...

In part one of this post, I have some character and Alkali Lake environment drawings. This is where the Weapon X Project was located in the movies. You guys know me, I'm more of an environment guy, not so much character for games, but it was nice to stretch my style a little bit here and get it to be a little more realistic compared to my comic book approach to things. The environment drawings posted here are just a small amount against the hundreds that were created by me and other concept artists. Especially Alkali Lake. This went through several changes in the game design and many ideas were just not used, due to time, or complication, but they would've been epic to see in the game.

This is the game where I actually began to change to working totally digitally on the Cintiq. I just couldn't draw on the Wacom tablet since there was the disconnect with my hand on the tablet and the cursor on the screen. The Cintiq removed that disconnect and so I was able to create a bit faster and clearer by dropping tones in under the drawing. Looking back on some of these, I could've probably been a little cleaner...

Here's a huge art dump for Raven Software's Singularity. I came onto the project for the last year and a half of it's production, so the look and feel was pretty well established, but still allowed for creative freedom in terms of layout, architectural details, and some props.

This is a small sample of the amount of work I've done on the project, but illustrates many things concept artists should be thinking about when working on a game.

This was a bit of a bummer for me when the idea to start you out in something like an abandoned LOST Dharma station, and while exploring you come across a control center that has a recording dedicating the station and you would realize you're in an alternate world. The world is over thrown by the USSR and science has taken a great leap based upon research of E-99.

Just getting back home from a great week in San Diego. The weather was a bit overcast for most of the time and the temps were comfortable to almost chilly compared to most of the weather around the country. C2E2 Commission Pics Part 3.

Last of the commissions from C2E2. The convention itself was a lot of fun and attracted many people from around the midwest who I used to see when I would hit the Mid Ohio Con or Motor City Con. There were also many Legion fan who dropped by to get books signed and let me know how much they appreciated the time we spent on the Legion and wouldn't mind seeing us return for an encore. Not sure if that would happen but with the Legion making a push back into the spotlight, I'd be happy to help out in any capacity. Made it back to Madison, safe and sound. Here are the few extra pieces I did for the show. The marker drawing of Supergirl was done for the art auction to benefit the Lupus foundation and the Comic Book Legal defense fund. It was paired up with the two volumes of my Sketchgames and ended up going for $150! Wow! Thank you whoever won the piece and for helping out those charities.

I can't really say enough good things about Fallcon. Nick and the crew are awesome as always and know how to take care of all the 200 artists there. Thanks for having us, we'll do it again next year. Saw many cool costumes. Great work on those, folks. Thanks to the fans that dropped by to check out my work, too!

Yes, it's been a while since my last post. No excuses! Shame on me. But just dropping a note for next week's show in Minneapolis, MN. FALLCON is once again nice enough to have me and my brother Phil out there this year and we are pleased as punch to attend!

San Diego Comicon 2009

All hands on deck!

As I write this I'm about 34,000 feet in the air. Using the wireless set up the have on this flight. It's nice and gives me something to do while I'm trying to stay awake and get back on central time after a late night of packing. Should also think to bring a DC adaptor to plug in.

All and all the convention was really packed, more than it seemed to be before. Lots more lines and lots of people waiting. But I think that's typical for this show now. My table set up, which I forgot to take a picture of was pretty typical, but probably lacking in something that would really grab the attention of people not familiar with me or my work. I probably did about 15 sketches for the show.

Wednesday we went out with some friends to LaJolla and along the sea cave there was a group of sea lions. From what I hear, there are plans to kick them off a beach somewhere nearby. Too bad. I think they're pretty cool to watch. Convention wise, it was Preview Night and it was packed. This was my day to say hi to fellow artists and trade some sketchbooks and buy various things.

Worked on a commission piece I'm coloring up and after talking with long distance sketch buddy, Paul Richards, and tossing around ideas, I really need to just stop and go basic with tone to kick things off. Granted, I need to relearn things about lighting and what not but I'll get there. We shall endeavor to persevere.

Yeah, this color thing is going to take a while to nail down. Lucky for me, fellow artist Eric Spray gave me a pdf of an Andrew Loomis book, Creative Illustration, and we'll see if I can manage to get some sort of theory into my brain. So, presented in all it's gaudy glory, my Rock Band avatar, Amber... again.

I'll have to see how these look on a different screen, since I'm working on the tablet PC the screen dims and i think I'm adjusting for that by having brighter, more saturated colors. Trying to work without line for me is tough too. I think I need to start doing some exercises from some good photo ref.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine profile

Sketchnight 03.31.09

Okay, I'm going to start to dedicate more time on these nights to doing more digital color work. It's really the only way I'm ever going to get better at it. I'm using my Toshiba M700 tablet PC. So in all it's hideous glory are two pieces I was messing around with tonight.

One piece was done in Artrage using the pencil tool. Kinda neat, since it looks like color pencil. The other piece of just the head was done in Photoshop. Grayscale multiply layer with linework over a color layer.

The character I'm using is my Rock Band character Amber. They have a real nice character creation system. Although she looks way cuter in the game at this point...

KANSAS CITY PLANET COMICON 2009

Just when you thought you could get away from the snow. Blam!
Saturday had lots of wet, heavy snow, but that didn't deter many fans from coming out and seeing all the artists, celebrities, and Playmates. Many books and prints were sold and a good number of commissions were done as well. Thank you for everyone that attended! Sounds like next year will be even better! I am determined to get a new volume of Sketchgames done for San Diego. Wish me luck!

Sketchnight: Future Cop

I did this drawing over a few weeks. Not that it actually took all that long, it's just that I tend to work on various things at sketchnight. Sometimes I work on commissions, when they're not smutty, sometimes I'll try doing a little painting on the tablet PC. Still need to get a programmable keypad for those ever-so-useful hotkeys.

Also, I like the way the drawing was turning out, so instead of leaving it in some 3/4 finished state, I actually finished it. Maybe I'll try coloring it next time.

Happy new year everyone. Hope it's a good one. Here are the roughs and pencils from last years homage to The Empire Strikes Back card.

THE THUMBNAIL
Yeah. Kinda hard to tell what's going on but you know what? It reads fine... in my head.

THE ROUGH
A larger cleaner version of the idea was drawn in my sketchbook and was scanned in to be enlarged and printed for lightboxing. But before that I added Corrine's legs sticking out of the tauntaun, because it looked a little weird to me without it.

THE PENCILS
What it says at the top of the pic. Omitted the probe bot blasting the wampa. For some sick reason I really like the sad tauntaun face with it's manga tears.

THE COLORING
Over all the coloring was pretty fast. Shifted toward blue and on my LCD monitor it looks really saturated now. From here the card was put together with the lettering and framing. Another card done!

Yep, it's that time of year again where we find ourselves dashing about, getting ready for the holidays, and traveling to see family and friends. If you do travel, may you have a safe journey and I wish everyone to have a great and prosperous new year.

For those of you that are still waiting on commissions, please be patient as I hope to get to them over my winter break. What's been keeping me so busy? Well, besides shoveling snow, Raven Software has been working on getting the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game to the finish line. Sheena: Dark Rising #2 Cover

After being done over a year ago I'm happy to say, "There it is. It feels good to have something on the stands again. So go out to your local shop an pick one up. It's one of three variant covers for this issue and published by Devil's Due. So, let's see how I went through my paces for this cover.

The Concept:

I was approached by Devil's Due Publishing and asked to do a cover for Sheena. Simple enough, but they didn't have a story for me to base it off of and so it would be a stand alone pinup type cover. The challenge lays in coming up with an idea that's different from what's been done before or what they might be sitting on. So I came up with the four concepts to the right. My hope was the heroine tied up image, kind of an homage to the pulp covers when Sheena was originally published. Plus it kinda tells a story and I think that makes it more interesting. Maybe they'll do a story based on the cover? That'd be cool.

The Prelims:

I can't remember if they left it up to me or if they agreed that the tied up heroine was more interesting and that's the cover they wanted. So I did a prelim drawing, much tighter than a rough or thumbnail. This is the drawing I would blow up and transfer to the board and tighten up even further for the final pencils.

There was to be some changes to the original idea, which was that the figures who tied Sheena up were not to be the "tribal headhunters" as often seen in those old stories. Simple enough, I'll just keep them in the shadows and make the knife less sacrificial looking. Originally I had the knife coming down from the top of the cover and into the middle but after showing it to, my bud, Cory, he suggested having the knives coming in from the side and even adding the second knife.

Penciling it up:

After workign up the prelim, I blew it up to full size and lighttabled the image to the board. I tend to transfer the lines light so I can erase them easier and make changes if need be. Since I was going to color this on the computer I was just going to scan the linework in and darken them down, so this meant I needed to make sure the pencils were nice and tight.
The first version I did after I penciled it was pretty much good to go, but the face and proportions kinda bugged me.
She wasn't cute and petite enough, so I redrew the face face on the board using the prelim face directly and would mess around with the proportions in Photoshop after it was scanned in.

Computer Coloring:

I don't do enough of it and every time I get back to it I have to relearn it. But there are artists I love to look at for their coloring: Shirow Masamune, Adam Hughes, Ugetsu Hakua, Hyung Tae Kim are ones coming to mind. Mind you, I am no where near getting my stuff to look as good as their work. As for the piece, I wanted the lighting to be coming from the fire pit and some nice rim lighting from the moon. Shadows would be cool pallet and the fire would be warm. Pretty standard. I tend to work in layers for the differnet elements: Sheena and the posts, fire pit and fire, foreground elements, background, and back drop. I tried to get her skin so it glistened a bit to get the feeling of heat and exertion. A little compositing for the night sky and it was done. Yeah! Sent off a high rez version and waited to see when it was going to be published.

Well it's not really all that old, but it has been a while since I had done these. They were done during a figure drawing class I attended and were both done during the same sitting. I forget which was done first. Maybe the ebony pencil on the newsprint then the color pencil on the canson paper.... I don't suppose it really matters but there you go.

Yeah, it's been a while since my last post. But here's something to look at for now. Every year I try and do a Christmas card with my Video Game Gals characters, and every year it's a kinda last minute thing, but oh, what's this? This year, I've gotten a jump on it and have a prelim ready to be lighttabled and then tightened up and colored. We'll have to see if I can manage to get it done in a short time. Hey everyone, just to let you know, albeit short notice, that I'll be at Fallcon this coming weekend. The guys at MCBA always run a great, fun show and it's their 20th anniversary, so if you check out their website, you'll see they have a great sketchcard collection done by over 170 artists! I'll be doing sketches, have my past sketchbooks and prints for sale. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get another sketchbook together for this year. But I will have a Legion print to give away that I was giving away at San Diego and Wizard World Chicago. W.C. This first weekend of May will have me and my Legion cohort, W.C. Carani appearing at Westfield Comics in Madison, WI on Saturday May 3, 2008. We'll be there to sign books and give away our new Legion print, so stop by and grab one. Upon looking at the print I can't believe I forgot that chicken hawk, Gates! D'oh! But I didn't put all the team members on there anyways, so there.

Then on Sunday, May 4th we'll be appearing at the Oconocon in Oconomowoc, WI, just outside of Milwaukee. Again, stop on by and say hi and get a free Legion print in honor of it's 50th anniversary. So here I was sitting in front of my computer trying to hack some information from the Master Control Program, when it detected my presence and shot a laser beam out that digitized my head and sent it into the virtual world.... hmmm... Why the hell would anyone put a computer terminal in front of a digitizing laser anyways?
This picture is of a 3 D scan of my head from last year. Raven is always getting new technology and I was happy to play guinea pig for it. As well as taking the scan, where you have to sit absolutely still for a few minutes, they also took several pictures at various angles of my face and head where, if character modelers and texture artists want, can use them as a base to start from. It's pretty spiffy.

So after doing the first rough, I thought it looked okay, but something still felt off. So I showed it to my partner in crime, Cory Carani and he suggested some layout arrangements, like moving the founders more center and kinda having Sensor bookend M'onel a bit. Also resized some other figures so the founders were more prominent. I think I'll go with this layout and hopefully get it done in short order seeing how the SDCC deadline for contributions to the souvenir book is April 25th.... BTW, this was drawn on the tablet at 72 dpi, so it's a little rough.

What do you do when you for get to bring your pencils to sketchnight and don't have one to borrow? Draw with a ball point pen. Interesting exercise. I've had to do this a couple times because of my brainfarts. Kinda like how it turned out, seeing how every line you put down is pretty much permanent. Unless you have white out. Which I didn't. Might drop some color in at some point.
Here's a work in progress for a Legion of Superheroes pin up that I'd like to get done for the San Diego Comic-con International souviner book this year. Might still mess around with the figures and composition. Of course the pin up will be of the our rebooted Legion, which seems to have been erased from the DCU now... >sniff< :(

Finally saw that tablet PCs were getting to the point of surpassing my desktop so I went for one of the newest machines out there. The Toshiba M700. It's spiffy and a little buggy being new and all but it's got a touchscreen and pen, which is really nice. I bought ArtRage 2.5 for the measily $25 and am just starting to get used to drawing on this. It feels like a Cintiq, only way smaller, but the resolution's nice at 1280 by 800. Here's a quick drawing I did in Art Rage at sketchnight.

Yes, figure drawing studio continues and this time we created some nicer lighting to get some decent shadows and such. I'm thinking some under lit ones next time, but we'll see. Just three different media this time around. Ebony pencil, Verithin black and white on gray tone sketchbook paper, and some vine charcoal. Never really used the vine charcoal and I'll have to take a picture of it since that's on a larger piece of paper than my scanner and there's no way I'm putting a dusty piece like that on my scanner and decide to post if I feel it's worth it.

Signed up for a class with some Raven buds on Wednedays where we go to the UW art building and draw people. The first class was canceled due to the wintery weather where 2000 cars got stranded on I-90 between Madison and Janesville. But this week's was a go and here are some of the results. I mosaic the naughty bits in case any children were around. The only gripe I have about the class was the poor lighting set up. There was just too much of it and it was hard to get good shadows going from where I was sitting.

The girl's not waiting for an oil change. I was. The girl is just what happened while I was waiting for an oil change. Original character here. Don't know what her story is. Is her outfit regular clothes or maybe some kinda sci-fi nurse thing...
I didn't have my regular lead on me (F or H) so I was using a pencil that had HB in it and didn't have a good eraser. HB is a little soft for my taste so I went with it and dropped a little tone in there. So I left the shop with clean oil in my car and a graphite palm... I call it a good day.

She started out as a rough sketch for a female warrior type but after adding the jacket and gloves and boots she pretty much looked like a pirate. So letting the drawing take me where it was going I added the eye patch and made it definite. The coloring took me a couple hours to figure out. Need to get faster and figure out what the hell I'm doing...

Here's a drawing from sketchnight colored up.
It's inspired by one of the things I noticed when I was over in Japan. I mean, how could I not. If you've ever heard the Cake song, "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" add boots to that and that's the trendy look. From what my friends say this look is more common around the Shibuya district, but you'll see it around the city and on the train. I'm not sure what the look is called, but I did pick up some fine magazines for reference (of course). It's a very cute to kind of a Pretty Woman call girl look. I'm not complaining either way. :)

Japan Trip: Musings...

Back home now and after a bit of jet lag, I'm almost back to normal. All said and done I had a wonderful time and want to thank Andrew, Miki, and Yoshio for hanging out and it was good to see Dan K. at Comiket. Should've taken a pic for the buds back home.

Being able to go to Japan and shop for books and figures was amazing, not to mention expensive. There's just so much good stuff there that you can't find easily or at all without having someone who knows where to look. My hats off to you Andrew. Thanks Miki and Yoshio for joining us and getting us some culture at Kamakura, I really enjoyed my time out there seeing the shrine and temples and my buddy Daibutsu. It was nice getting out of the city for the day.

This trip was more about satisfying the otaku in me but after spending the week there I would really like to return and do a more cultural experience, visiting historical sites, hot springs, maybe even cherry blossom viewing, if the season's right.

I will probably think of something that I forgot to cover and will post later on but for now there are pictures from my trip to look at (lots of cosplay and architecture it seems), and some commercials that I saw on tv with some American movie stars like Cameron Diaz. The ones with Tommy Lee Jones are great with the best. Try and catch them all...

Tokyo Tower

Yeah this is about a week late but better than nothing. After doing a bit more shopping at Akihabara, we went out to Tokyo Tower to do the touristy thing. Word of advice, don't go anytime around New Years. It was pretty busy and full of those pesky pushy gaijin. Probably better off going at other times during the year. I would've like to have gotten to the observation deck before the sun went down but I did still get some nice shots of the city and Mt. Fuji, so you can see what a huge city it is. After that it was time to pack it all up and return to the States. Picked up some boxes from Tokyu Hands and spent the night trying to figure out how to get it all home without having the check in luggage go overweight. Solution, put it all in your carry on. Not the best idea since you have to carry it around but it worked.

All is quiet, on New Year's Day...

Well, not so much as this is the day when you go and visit temples and make wishes for the new year. We met up with a high school friend Miki and her husband Yoshio and headed out to Kamakura which is about an hour and a half outside of Tokyo, where it goes along the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean.

Once there we ate at a very nice soba restaurant and then waited in line for the main temple. There's an honor guard at the temple that has some really spiffy uniforms. After that we visited the daibuttsu, the giant bronze Buddha you can actually go inside for a measily 20 yen and then went to another temple nearby where we caught an amazing view and sunset over Kamakura.

Couple of days left in the trip. Little more shopping at Akihabara and then maybe the Tokyo Tower. Hope it's a clear day so I can get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji

The day started out like it has but earlier. The complimentary breakfast of champions as seen above, made lovingly by nice elderly ladies. I really like the Toyoko Inn. It's clean and the staff are really helpful and nice. Then off to the con.

I have survived the last day of 'ket. Whew what a ride. The crowd was much more like how american conventions used to be between the sexes, much to my shagrin. Probably about 99 percent men as the picture shows of us waiting, unlike the second day where it's about 95 percent women who are picking up their boy love doujinshi. Sorry I wasn't able to take any pictures inside but they don't allow any photography inside. The asiles were crammed with otaku and sometimes you were pushed along wheather you wanted to go a certain way or not. But by the end of the day it was a little less crowded and you can move around but some of the more popular circles were already gone for the day, having sold out of their books. :(

Andrew and I were starving by the time we were done so we stopped by the McDonald's before getting on the train to have a Mega Tamago set. I don't think you will see them carrying this back in the States, with the general health concerns, but boy was it tasty. It had a nice spicy black pepper sauce that complimented the egg nicely.

Tonight I think we're going to take it easy and go out and see how they celebrate New Year's Eve. Andrew says it's not really this night that's the holiday but New Year's Day, where you go to a temple and wish for a good new year and such. Hopefully we'll be doing that tomorrow.

Comiket Day 2

It was a beautiful morning. Sunny and warm, maybe 60 degrees. Felt like spring. The second day of the con was focused more on the boys love doujinshi, so really not my cup of tea, but I did find some stuff to service my needs and needless to say we were out of the halls and back onto the cosplay patio. The moment we got up there there was a front coming in but I managed to get some nice shots. Once the front started moving in it got really cold and some cosplayers couldn't keep their head gear on. Andrew and I headed out and went to Shibuya which is another shopping district and we were going to hit Harajuku street but it was raining and crappy so I doubt the people who normally dress up and show off were there. :(
Day 3 is where the exhibitors sell pretty much all the hentai stuff, so needless to say it'll be packed. Need my rest.

End to an incredible day in Akihabara. The second trip after we returned to the hotel to drop stuff off, I decided to take it easy and just shop for some figures. Some real nice finds and I played at a ,whatchacallit claw machine game for the first time. Yeah they took about 1700 yen of my money but most of that was on the first figure while the second figure took 5 tries. They're the two figures below the Bubblegum crisis figure. Will be making a return trip to see what the other toy stores have, but tomorrow is the first day of 'ket so I need me rest.

Arrival in Tokyo

after running to catch a plane in Dallas Ft.　Worth I made my connection and suvived the 13 hour plane ride over here, only to find that my luggage didnt. Thats okay because I have to wait for my friend and guide Andrew to arrive in a couple hours. The next flight from Dallas had my bags on it and met up with Andrew. We made our way from Narita to Tokyo via the train where our hotel was waiting: the Toyoko Inn chain. Very nice and clean although a bit small if you dont mind, which I dont. We finished out the evening by walking around the area and Andrew gave me the 2 yen tour and managed to get some shopping done at an anime store called toranana, but only managed to get an hour in before they closed for the night and then at a Yoshinoya and had a lovely beef bowl set. The weather is nice and cool compared to the tundra like weather Wisconsin was in. Not really jet lagged so I should be good to go to take on more running around. Ganbarre! (Ill have to check my spelling on that, plus the keyboard are kinda funky with the multiple shifting so my puncuations a little off, its a learning thing....)

Yup, in a couple days I will be heading off to the land of the rising sun and Fujiyama. I hope to post some photos of my trip here as the trip goes on. This isn't my first time to Japan, but it'll be a first for me as I'll be attending Comiket and seeing what that's all about and looking for doujinshi, manga and other books that seem hard to come by in the states. So check back every now and then and hopefully there will be something new to see. Ittekimasu!

Aside from anime and manga, Japan also offers the world of Race Queens, or at least that's what I see them called. I guess they're cheerleaders for the racing teams. I've picked up some mooks and magazines that feature them, because they offer some inspiration for costuming and look just so darn cute. Here's a little drawing I did during a sketchnight and colored up in about 10 minutes waiting for a meeting for some work.

Here's another Raven theme that was for around the time of Halloween. A succubus mummy restoring her youth from some guy. The idea is to have some nice lighting and color going on with his essence draining from his mouth, or more likely, someplace else... I like messing around with that weird foreshortening that you see in the japanese manga and anime. Just looks so cool and dynamic, but I'll need more practice to get it down.
